Broken Barrel TNT 2021
WINEMAKING
A unique blend made from the Tempranillo, Tannat and a drop of Petite Sirah (Durif). The Tempranillo and Tannat varieties are known for their dark fruit flavours and adding structure to blends from Spain, Portugal and South-West of France. These varieties were introduced to the Cape (by Fairview) for their charming rustic and robust character and the resilience against warm climates. We present a blend that
will explode like TNT with a bold bouquet and ageworthy tannin.
Picked later in this cool cintage – early to mid March 2021 Grapes were destemmed, crushed and fermented separately in open top stainless tanks. Pump overs and punch downs (pigeage) were done 3-4 times per day during fermentation to extract flavour, colour and tannins from the berries.
Finally, the wine was pressed and matured in barrels for 18 months in medium toasted oak barrels, assisting in taming the tannin.
TASTING NOTE
Deep ruby colour with an explosive aroma of ripe plums, cassis and warm baking spices, think cinnamon and cardamom.
The palate has layers of dark fruit and liquorice, a fullbodied structure with bold, firm tannins which makes it great inspiration in the kitchen
Enjoy now or age for 5 – 8 years for a softer structure.
FOOD RECOMMENDATION
A great match for any South African inspired Braai – be it with venison from the Karoo or chops from the shops as the structure compliments an array of flavours. Great company to the Fairview blue mould cheese range or a warm spicey stew.
