Broken Barrel 2021

IN THE VINEYARD:
A blend of Shiraz, Mourvèdre and Grenache. The Shiraz grapes are grown in the cool Darling region, a favourite amongst our winemakers for the expressive black pepper and herbal aromas. The Mourvèdre and Grenache vineyards are organic, dryland farmed and from the Swartland region. The 2021 vintage was one of the best in recent years for Rhone varieties, with long ripening periods and no heatwaves or water stress. These ideal conditions allowed for soft tannins and the
preservation of the spicey nuances of these varieties. We present a blend that will transport you to the lively and colourful spice markets of North Africa, which has inspired this colourful label.

HARVEST DATE:
Picked late in February and early March 2021. This cool vintage allowed for up to two extra weeks of phenolic ripening.

WINEMAKING:
Grapes were destemmed, crushed and fermented separately in open top wooden foudres and concrete tanks. The Grenache was fermented with 10% whole bunches.
Pump overs and punch downs (pigeage) were done 3-4 times per day during fermentation to extract flavour, colour and tannins from the berries. Finally, the wine was pressed and matured in oak barrels for 18 months. Mostly seasoned oak barrels were used.

TASTING NOTE:
Deep burgundy colour with ripe plums and inviting spices of black pepper, cloves, and French herbs. The palate is dense with blackcurrants, cinnamon and touches of herbaceous fynbos. This wine is full bodied with balanced and chalky tannins.
Enjoy now or age up to 5 years.

FOOD RECOMMENDATION:
A great match for all African inspired “braai” dishes. Enjoy with hearty Moroccan inspired dishes such as lamb or chicken tagines with grilled vegetables and couscous. Or simply enjoy next to the fire with a platter of hummus, biltong and cheese (Blue, Brie or spicey cream cheese).
